nyone who has ever seen pictures of the Longxi Wharf, might find it hard to believe that the pictures are not edited since            the place looks like it’s right out of a fantasy.

Located in Yichang, a six-hour drive away from Wuhan City, the Village on the Water makes up one of many attractions found along the Yangtze Cruise Tour, and I would argue that it is the only attraction worth stopping for along the tour. Trust me when I say that coming to this single attraction is well worth the six-hour journey here from Wuhan.

The pictures of Longxi Wharf that one sees on the internet are exactly the same as what they see in real life, even down to the woman in a red dress, singing on a boat.

Longxi Wharf (also known as Longxi Brook) is a historically accurate recreation of the residence of the Tribe of the Three Gorges, as said by my tour guide.

The first observance was the actors posing as natives of the Tribe of the Three Gorges, roaming Longxi Brook. Some activities that the natives are doing include washing clothes by the river and playing the Guzheng or Flute, showcasing what life was like for the people who used to live here.

A highlight of the place was witnessing a Local Wedding Custom Performance, in which the “bride” character would choose a “bridegroom” from the audience, who would participate in a marriage ceremony with her.

In this performance, it is customary that the bride weeps before the marriage ceremony, firstly to express her sorrow for leaving her family to live a new life, as well as her jubilation for her upcoming wedding with her beloved. This is part of the Tujia culture and is quite elaborately showcased in this modern exhibition of historical traditions.

If you would like to catch one such spectacle, they take place at the Wedding House, throughout the day, in 30 to 45-minute intervals. Depending on the time of visit, there might be singing, dancing or acting performances ongoing.

The Yellow Dragon Waterfall is said to have gotten its name as the fall resembles water pouring out of a dragon’s mouth.

The Yellow Dragon Waterfall is another sight to behold as water flows out from a cave on the cliffside and cascades into a pool of pure green water.

Depending on how the light hits the surface of the water, it takes on either a turquoise sapphire hue or an aquamarine topaz tint. The alluring crystalline waters will even show one’s own reflection when peering over the handrails.

My tour guide mentioned that the waters of the river have been tainted by soil erosion and various forms of pollution, while the water of the brook remains clear and undisturbed, close to its natural condition and it is truly a sight to behold.

It is as though this bridge at the entrance of the river separates reality from this surreal fantasy world of Longxi Wharf.

There is still so much more to discover at this little attraction, but no words can express the wonder of Longxi Wharf because really, its beauty should be experienced in person.
