Trend

Stay up to date with the latest in men’s apparel with Nathaniel Tan as he shows you where to shop for affordable, trendy clothes, in Wuhan.

hen one mentions shopping or China, many online retailers such as TaoBao, EzBuy and AliExpress, first comes to                         mind. From a survey conducted using Instagram’s poll function, out of a total of 348 respondents, 72.1 per cent of respondents have visited such online retailers before. Out of the 72.1 per cent, 87.3 per cent had made follow up purchases from these Chinese E-commerce sites.

When visiting China, you will find that there are brands that sell styles of such apparel from these online stores. They are the H&Ms, Zaras and Topmans of China and will frequently chance upon these brands in Wuhan. If one is looking to visit a few on the same day, it’s a must to head down to JiangHan Road Station (江汉路站)  where they are all within walking distance of one another.

Many stores have unique offers, in addition to the already affordable prices in comparison to Singapore. If you are into fashion, you can make your finances go a long way, shopping here at JiangHan.

Sanfu store at Jianghan Road Station, just outside exit G.

The first store worth mentioning is Sanfu, which offers the most varied types of clothing– from casual, stylish everyday wear to formal button-up shirts, trousers and ties.

They have many trendy clothing pieces such as cargo pants with straps at the ankles, bomber jackets in an array of colours and even the ever-popular style of the coach jacket. These pieces are similar to that of brands such as Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, but without the sky-high prices associated with luxury fashion brands.

Some of the clothing items and accessories there look like they came straight off the runways in Paris, with designs that look almost identical to their luxury fashion counterparts.

A Rollercoaster belt found at Sanfu for 49 yuan (S$10), looks exactly identical to high-end brand, Alyx, which retails for 300 British Pounds (S$527).

One example is the trending rollercoaster belt. Sanfu sells one which is incredibly similar to the Alyx belt which has become popular in the world of fashion recently. However, the belt sells for an exorbitant 300 Pounds, whereas the belt found at Sanfu was just 49 Yuan. For the price of one Alyx belt, you could easily get 50 at Sanfu!

clothes to create trendy, fashion-forward outfits at a price the average student can afford. I would highly recommend this store to anyone who wants to stay on the cutting edge of fashion and be the most stylish gentleman in any room.

This store, Semir, is known for its low prices and was packed with customers the day we visited.

Semir is another place to go for massive discounts for the latest fashion. As I entered the store, it was packed with shoppers, attracted by large red signs reading “Buy One Get One”. Many of the clothes sold here are close approximations of their more costly counterparts and with the many price reductions the store has, it is easy to put together a stylish outfit without breaking the bank.

One of the more unique finds was a white hoodie with a blue hood, very reminiscent of the hoodie worn by K-Pop star Jungkook in his iconic performance of DNA by BTS.

Another store, Kama, has a layout reminiscent of the Japanese mega-company, Uniqlo, with clothes arranged neatly on shelves and hung tastefully to attract the eyes of any passers-by.

However, unlike Uniqlo’s simple and minimalistic aesthetic, the clothes at Kama are loud and bold. If you want to turn heads while walking down the street, Kama is the place for you.

Kama grabs your attention with its eye-catching display of apparel, in accordance with their colors, making for a pleasing browsing experience.

Many of us are familiar with purchasing Chinese goods from Chinese sites such as Ezbuy and Taobao. However, a common issue that plagues online consumers is that you can never be 100 per cent sure if the products are as described. There are many unexpected circumstances, for instance, sizing issues due to outdated sizing charts, pictures which poorly represent the product or just outright being sent the wrong item.

These setbacks make online shopping a hassle for consumers. Here at Wuhan's JiangHan street, you can try these clothes in person, eliminating any guessing games that come with shopping online.
