Re Gan Mian 热干面

One of the top five noodle dishes in China and most renowned delicacy is Re Gan Mian (热干面) also known as  Hot Dry Noodles. 

The noodles are mixed with sesame paste, vinegar, chilli oil and topped with spring onions.

Locals favourite place to indulge in this specialty is at the renowned Cai Lin Ji restaurant. 

With its thick consistency, strong hints of sesame and rich flavour, it is a favourite among Wuhan locals and tourists, a delicacy not to be missed.

Dou Pi 豆皮

Doupi is a famous street food snack in Wuhan that requires great expertise to make.

The dish is typically wrapped in a layer of tofu skin which is filled with sticky rice and typically pork, mushrooms and bamboo shoots.

 

Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, this savoury dish is a must-try not to be missed.

Mian Wo 面窝

Mian Wo, also known as fried rice buns, is a deep fried doughnut-shaped snack.

Mian Wo is made of deep fried rice batter, consisting of the ingredients: soy bean paste, ground polihed round-grain rice, shallots and scallions. 

Locals typically pair Mianwo with beef noodles, soy bean milk or beancurd. It also can be savoured on it’s own, making it a delicious mid-day snack.

Wuchang Yu 武昌鱼

Wuchang yu is a popular local dish of Wuhan’s that is not for the impatient. Trust us when we say you need to eat this dish with extreme caution! Fished from the local waters, Wuchang Yu has soft flaky meat but contains many small bones.

It can be cooked in many ways, but the most common way is through steaming it with soya sauce and sliced chilli. As a local signature dish, it can often be found as a speciality on restaurant menus.

Average price range: 30 yuan (S$6) to 50 yuan (S$10)

Skewers

Walk into any night market in Wuhan and you will definitely be greeted with a smoky grilled aroma. This comes from barbecued skewers stores that dot the street food scene in Wuhan.

These stores provide a range of meats from lamb to beef. Apart from the savoury and tender meat, what makes these skewers special is their unbelievably low price, which commonly costs less than S$1.

Average price range: 3 yuan (S$0.60) to 5 yuan (S$1) per stick

Hot Pot

Hot Pot, also known as steamboat, is an excellent meal to have when you’re with friends or family. Eaten mostly during the colder months of October and November, a simmering pot of soup is placed at the middle of the table with raw ingredients meant to be added and cooked in it throughout the meal.

The soup flavours range from spicy to sweet and are sure to fit anyone’s taste buds. With heat playing a huge role in Wuhan's food tapestry, the mala-flavoured soup is most popular.
